Cherrelle is one of R&B’s most recognizable voices, celebrated for timeless classics including “Saturday Love,” “I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On,” and “Everything I Miss at Home.” Born in Los Angeles, California, she began her musical journey working with jazz and R&B legends Norman Connors and Michael Henderson before touring with New Edition and Luther Vandross. She quickly became an international success, touring the world both as a solo artist and with Alexander O’Neal. After hearing her demo, Tabu Records founder Clarence Avant signed Cherrelle to the label in 1983. She adopted her stage name after a former boss jokingly called out, “Cherrelle, you’re late again!”

Under the acclaimed production team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Cherrelle released her debut album, Fragile, in 1984. The album introduced her breakthrough hit, “I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On,” which became an R&B Top 10 success and was later famously covered by Robert Palmer and Mariah Carey.

Her sophomore album, High Priority, earned Gold certification and featured the signature duet “Saturday Love” with Alexander O’Neal. The song reached No. 2 on the Billboard R&B chart and became an international hit, climbing to No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart. Cherrelle and O’Neal reunited for another successful collaboration, “Never Knew Love Like This,” which also reached No. 2 on the R&B chart. Her third album, Affair (1988), produced the No. 1 R&B smash “Everything I Miss at Home,” while the title track became another Top 5 R&B hit.

Throughout her career, Cherrelle has collaborated with some of music’s most respected artists and producers. In 1991, she appeared alongside Johnny Gill on Pebbles’ hit single “Always” before releasing The Woman I Am, produced by Narada Michael Walden. She connected with Stevie J for her independent album “The Right Time” in 1999, which featured guest appearances from rapper Keith Murray.

Music runs deep in Cherrelle’s family. She is the cousin of singer Pebbles, the aunt of Brandi Williams of Blaque.
